Cone collars are our most popular starter collars. These collars drape over the birds body protecting mild to moderate pluckers from accessing preferred plucking areas. The Fringy Cone was developed for more severe pluckers.
The neck collar works by restricting neck range of motion and making it harder for your bird to reach most body parts.
Our bird vests support neck and back mutilators. A mutilator has developed a compulsive habit and they often benefit from stacking a bird collar on top.
When a bird is bleeding or chewing its skin and muscle tissue, we call this self-mutilation. It’s a life-threatening condition that requires specialized care.
Self-mutilation takes on an obsessive-compulsive nature. To properly manage it, consider a strong collar, psychotropic medication and/or behavioral support.
This is where my 3-step approach comes in. First, bird collars, like the self mutilation combo can interrupt mutilation and keep your bird safe.

First things first: The feel of clothing against feathers feels weird to your pet. Positive reinforcement training will help your bird get over this.
Second, your bird may have to build up stamina to bear the weight of a bird collar. Consider using a rehabilitation container to prevent injuries. You might also want to start your bird off in a bird collar for just 15-30 minutes a day, slowly building up time as your bird gets stronger.
Third, your bird is already anxious so you'll have to help it learn that the collar is indeed safe. Our Parrot Calming Formula can support your pet's frayed nerves.
Bird collars are machine washable in your washing machine. Place the collar in a lingerie bag, if you have one. Always use a non-fragranced laundry detergent. Lay it flat to dry.
You may hand wash the collar, as well. Please ensure that you thoroughly rinse the collar. We recommend that you keep a second collar on hand should the first color becomes soiled.
Consider the weight of a bird collar. We recommend that the collar you choose weighs 25% or less of your birds weight. For instance, if your bird weighs 100 grams, choose a collar that weighs no more than 25 grams. Our designs are weight conscious.
Think about it like this… Your bird is already stressed. Its immune system and stamina maybe weakened. Your bird will need to build up strength to carry the weight of a collar. It will also need to develop emotional stamina to tolerate the collar.
Birds have extremely flexible necks, quick feet, an ingenious, strong beak, and they're actually pretty clever. We've found that the more entrenched that the problem has become the more the bird fights the collar.
For collars with a Velcro closure, get some moleskin in the foot section at a drug store and use it to adhere the two sides together on the underside of the collar. You can also spray the collar with a safe bitter spray like Bitter Yuk.
Plucking habits often respond well to a training strategy called positive reinforcement trainingwhich teaches your bird to be calm, and improves its overall well-being.
I highly advise using the technique called Positive Reinforcement when training your bird to tolerate the collar. It involves lavishly rewarding your bird for doing nothing other than messing with the collar.

We've had no reports to date of birds overheating our bird collars. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen.
Watch your bird carefully to make sure it's not overheated while wearing a bird collar.
Just like people, bird sizes can vary widely even within a species. Make sure that you know your birds weight in grams when choosing the correct bird collar size.
You can get an affordable kitchen scale that weighs in grams on Amazon.
If your bird has never worn a collar before we recommend introducing the collar gradually, if that's even possible. Always use a bird collar under strict supervision.
1. Begin collar training when you have a few days off so you can closely supervise your bird to make sure they are eating and drinking.
2. On the first day, Put the collar on for a half-hour or less. Add 15 minutes or so on the second day, and so on until your bird is tolerating the collar for long periods.
3 Gradually increase the time each day as your bird gains both physical and emotional stamina to tolerate the collar.
4. After a few days of close supervision, you'll start to learn how well your bird tolerates the collar.
5. ALWAYS use your judgment on whether your bird is safely tolerating the collar for long periods of time before leaving it unsupervised in the collar.
